ChongZe

Installing welded gabion mesh (also known as welded gabion mesh) is a structurally strong and clearly defined engineering operation, suitable for scenarios such as landscape walls, retaining walls, and slope protection. The following are the standard construction steps for welded gabion:

    Step 1: Preparation before construction
    • Clean the foundation: Remove debris and sharp stones from the ground, compact the foundation, and ensure it is flat and solid..
    • Laying anti-seepage layer(if necessary): Lay composite geomembrane to prevent soil erosion..
    • Set cushion layer: Concrete cushion layer or gravel layer can be laid to enhance stability..
Step 2: Assemble the welded gabion box body

    • Unfold the mesh: Spread the welded mesh flat and check if it is intact and undamaged..
    • Connect into a box:
      • Use spiral binding wires or buckles to connect the bottom plate, side plate, and partition into a box.
      • Set a connection point every 20cm to ensure a sturdy structure.
      • Set up "eight character lines" to reinforce the four corners of the box to prevent deformation.
    • Pre connection of empty containers(optional): Connect multiple empty container bodies into a whole first, and then fill them with stones uniformly to improve efficiency..

    Step 3: Fill stone material
    • Stone selection requirements:
      • The stones should be hard, non weathered, and generally have a particle size between 8-20cm.
      • The exposed surface should be made of larger and flatter stones to enhance its aesthetic appeal.
    • Layered filling:
      • Layered stone filling, with appropriate vibration after each layer is filled to ensure compactness.
      • Avoid filling it all at once to prevent the box from bulging and deforming.
    • Reserved settlement space: The top can be slightly raised by 2-3cm to leave room for later settlement.
Various rocks and stones are used for gabion filling to achieve slope protection and landscaping.

    Step 4: Cover and fixing
The gabion was filled with stones. A mesh-like lid was being put on, with a red arrow indicating the direction of the lid's installation.
    • Cover: Cover the top cover mesh and fix it with a spiral wire with a pitch of ≤ 50mm.
    • Connection between boxes: Adjacent boxes are connected with binding wires or metal rings to form a cohesive structure..
    • Set up tie bars(for retaining walls): Set up tie bars in the height direction of the wall to prevent bulging and deformation..
    Step 5: Backfilling and vegetation
    • Layered backfilling: The backfill soil behind the wall should be compacted in layers to avoid lateral pressure concentration..
    • Soil cover greening: The top can be covered with 10-15cm humus soil, which is convenient for planting vegetation and enhances ecological effects..

⚠️ Precautions

  • Welded gabion mesh is suitable for landscapes, retaining walls, slope protection, etc., and is not suitable for high velocity river erosion areas.
  • During installation, avoid violent pulling to prevent solder joints from breaking.
  • All connection points must be firmly tied, otherwise it may cause structural looseness or local collapse.

📌 Summary

The core of installing welded gabion mesh lies in:flat foundation → firm box body → dense stone filling → neat cover → overall connection. Compared to woven gabion mesh, its structure is more regular and beautiful, suitable for landscape engineering, but its flexibility is slightly inferior and requires strengthened connection and fixation.
